🍂 Here’s What Fall Organizing Looks Like

Below, you’ll find a few key areas that will help you kickstart your Fall Organizing. Take some time to read through them and apply the ones that fit for you. Then scroll to the end for an invitation to share what you’re working on, receive accountability, or to simply connect with others who are trying to create more manageable homes. We would love to have you join us in the Nicely Placed Community Hub.

1. Clothing: Make Room for Fall Layers

One of the easiest places to start organing this Fall is s your closet.

For some of us, summer is still here, but for others your summer clothes has served its purpose. You may not need all of them taking up your closet right now.

This can be a good time to:

  • Move summer pieces to a less accessible area, like the back of your closet where you’re less likely to pull from.
  • Bring sweaters, jackets, and other fall layers forward.
  • Notice what you didn’t wear this summer.
  • Let go of items that no longer fit, feel good, or work for your current lifestyle.

Simply creating more room for the clothes you’ll reach for can this season make getting dressed a little easier.

2. Routines: Adjust Your Systems

Fall often brings a different rhythm to our households. Even though it seems like a season of slow movement, it can be far from it.

You have school schedules. Work routines. Practices. Meetings. Appointments. Fall activities.

The systems that worked during a slower season may not work as well anymore.

So this is a good time to ask:

What is becoming harder to keep up with?

Maybe it’s getting out the door in the morning.

Backpacks, shoes, and bags are possibly piling up.

Maybe your family needs a better way of keeping track of everyone’s schedules.

But instead of adding more to your to-do lists, look at where your current systems are no longer working smoothly.

Sometimes the solution isn’t doing more.

It’s making the system easier to maintain. Evaluate the systems you have in place and try a new one if the old one no longer works well.

3. Decluttering: Let Go of What No Longer Fits

One thing to notice is that every season gives us an opportunity to notice what has changed. Just like we’re noticing this about our systems.

And sometimes that means recognizing that certain things no longer belong in the life we’re living. For example:

Have your children have outgrown their clothes or toys?

Does your home have a different design layout than it did a year ago?

Are you tired of managing things that you’re no longer using, moving it around because it’s in the way often?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s a sign that it’s time to declutter. You don’t have to get rid of everything.

Instead:

Challenge yourself to declutter one area (i.e. clothes, toys, decorations) per week.

🍁 A Little Reminder From Us

Fall organizing isn’t about creating a picture-perfect home.

It’s about creating a home that supports the rhythm of your life as it changes.

And this is also why we like starting with these changes before the holiday season gets busy.

When we give ourselves a little breathing room now, we’re not trying to solve everything when November and December arrive.

So take a look around your home.

What feels harder to do than it needs to be?

What are you reaching for every day?

What keeps getting in the way?

You don’t have to tackle everything.

Start with one space. One routine. One decision.

And if you would like to share what you’re working on, receive accountability, or simply connect with others who are trying to create more manageable homes, we’d love to have you join us inside the Nicely Placed Community Hub on Facebook.

It’s a space for steady reminders, moments to celebrate your wins (big and small), and support that fits real life, your life.
