Here’s an organizing method from a book I’ve read recently, How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. Instead of trying to organize an entire room all in one sitting, start by looking through the room for items in these five categories (one catergory per day of the week):
1. Trash
Anything that needs to be thrown away.
2. Dishes
Anything that belongs in the kitchen or needs to be washed.
3. Laundry
Clothing, towels, linens, or anything that belongs with your laundry.
4. Things that have a home
Group the items that have the same home in their own sections.
5. Things that don’t have a home
Set these aside. You don’t have to solve them right now.
First, gather the items together for each category.
You’re not pulling everything out. Not creating a bigger mess before you can make things better. There’s no pressure to finish the entire room in one afternoon.
Just five categories to work your way through, and if one category doesn’t apply to the room you’re organizing, move to the next one.
Then once you’ve made it through all of the categories, start sorting and cleaning. Move backwards up the list. Find a home for each item, and put it there. Put the items that have a home where they belong. Wash and dry your laundry. Clean your dishes in the kitchen. Get rid of all trash.
Sometimes a reset moves step by step, in smaller sections rather than big chunks that overwhelm us.
🤎 A Little Reminder From Us
If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to get organized, this is your reminder that you don’t have to do everything at once.
You can start with one drawer.
One pile.
One room.
Or you can ask for support.
That’s what we’re here for.
If you’re ready to create a home with more structure, less clutter, and systems that support the life you’re living right now, we’d love to connect. Fill out the form below to get in contact with us now.
